Misplaced Childhood turns 40 this year, Marillion's concept album about recovering a lost inner self, now pressed as a picture disc.

Fish wrote most of this in a single burst of inspiration during an acid trip, structuring the whole record as one continuous piece flowing across two sides rather than a collection of discrete songs, a genuinely ambitious move for a band still often dismissed as Genesis revivalists. Recorded at Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin with Chris Kimsey producing, this 1985 album proved neo-prog could still land on daytime radio without losing its structural ambition, becoming the record that made Marillion a genuine chart act rather than a cult concern.

Kayleigh remains the song everyone knows, that instantly recognisable guitar line carrying real heartbreak all the way to number two in the UK charts. Lavender takes the opposite approach, piano-led and gentler, proving Fish could write tenderness as convincingly as bombast. Heart of Lothian unfolds as one of the album's medleys, shifting mood and tempo without ever losing the emotional thread, and Childhood's End closes the whole cycle with the kind of cathartic resolution concept albums rarely earn honestly.

Forty years on, still the album that proved prog could be personal rather than just technical. Fish never wrote anything this vulnerable again.
