For Dancing in Quiet Light is four tracks of pedal steel and nothing else, Luke Schneider making an ambient record out of an instrument most people only associate with heartbreak in 4/4.
Schneider has spent years quietly arguing that the pedal steel belongs in ambient music as much as it does behind a country singer, and this 2025 EP is his most concentrated case yet. Everything you hear was performed on a single Emmons push/pull pedal steel, an instrument built for sliding between notes rather than landing on them, which turns out to be exactly what long form drone wants. Released through Leaving Records, a label with a long history of putting out music designed to change the temperature of a room, it fits the catalogue without sounding like anything else on it.
The title track opens by establishing the whole logic of the record, tones that swell and decay with no percussion to mark time, so nothing ever quite arrives. A Map of Invisible Trails is the most searching stretch here, notes bending upward and dissolving before they resolve, while Where the Wind Left Traces sits lower and warmer, closer to breathing than melody. The coda returns to the opening theme with the reverence of a benediction.
Quiet light, and something to dance to in it, if you're patient.
