Æppreciation VIII is Claus Larsen's eighth entry in a running tribute series, turning female-fronted pop and rock anthems into EBM machinery, pressed here on blue and black marble.

Larsen founded Leæther Strip in Aalborg, Denmark in 1988, and his debut single Japanese Bodies immediately marked him as one of the harder, more uncompromising voices in the emerging electro-industrial scene, releases like The Pleasure of Penetration and Solitary Confinement helping define what EBM actually sounded like through the 1990s. Nearly forty years and thirty albums later, this covers series has become one of his more purely enjoyable side projects, taking songs everyone already knows and running them through his signature aggressive, mechanized production without losing what made the originals work in the first place.

Only Happy When It Rains gets rebuilt with genuine industrial weight underneath Garbage's original melancholy. Dancing on My Own trades Robyn's heartbreak-on-the-dancefloor concept for something colder and more relentless, arguably closer to the emotional bruise the song was always chasing. Live to Tell reworks Madonna's ballad into something considerably darker, and Somebody Told Me closes the album at its most aggressive, The Killers' original barely recognizable under Larsen's treatment.

Eight volumes deep into this series, and the formula still finds new ways to make familiar songs sound genuinely dangerous.
