Jonah Yano & The Heavy Loop is the sound of a songwriter folding his live band into the heart of his music, eight tender songs that hang in the air like breath on glass.

Born in Hiroshima, raised in Vancouver and now based in Montreal, Yano has spent his career writing about family, distance and the Japanese diaspora, beginning with his 2020 debut Souvenir and continuing through 2023's Portrait of a Dog. For this 2024 album on Innovative Leisure he turned the ensemble that backs him on stage into his studio band, and invited Clairo, Helena Deland and Ouri to drift in and out of the songs.

The Language of Coincidence turns the odd logic of how lives intersect into something almost conversational, Someone Asked Me How I've Been circles the small honest question most of us answer badly, and The Heavy Loop closes things with all the gravity its title promises.

Eight songs, one patient sound, and a reminder that the most affecting records are often the quietest ones. Yano writes with the unhurried honesty of someone who has learned that grief and tenderness can share a room, and the band around him knows exactly when to hold back. Best heard from start to finish, ideally with the lights low.
