John Waters Covers 'Little Cindy' [7-inch Red] Vinyl
John Waters Covers 'Little Cindy' is the 79-year-old filmmaker's third Sub Pop holiday single, and it might be his strangest gift to bad children everywhere yet.
The song in question is Happy Birthday Jesus, originally recorded in a single unrepeatable take by child gospel singer Little Cindy back in 1959 and later included on Waters' own John Waters Christmas compilation as one of his most beloved finds. Here he covers it himself, deliberately channeling Little Cindy's exact vocal quirks and stumbles from that original 45, produced again by Grammy winner Ian Brennan. It's less parody than genuine tribute filtered through Waters' particular sense of reverent absurdity, treating a minor obscure gospel recording as something close to sacred.
Side A delivers that Little Cindy channeling in full, Waters fully committed to the bit without a trace of irony undercutting the sincerity underneath it. The flip, A Pig Latin Visit from St. Nicholas, translates the classic Christmas poem into the secret childhood dialect his mother taught him in the 1950s, the same language Divine's family chanted in Pink Flamingos, delivered here as a genuinely effective way to clear a room of overstaying party guests.
Two sides of holiday lunacy from someone who's spent decades making bad taste look like devotion. Red vinyl suits the mischief completely.
