Whitewalls & Harmonies is the debut from Jaywalk and The Cadillacs, and it sounds exactly like what happens when two producers stop worrying about which genre they're supposed to be in.

The duo is Ash Walker, the London producer with a gift for dusty, humid arrangements, and Illa J, lyricist and multi-instrumentalist, younger brother of J Dilla, which is a lineage he has never leaned on so much as quietly extended. Much of this 2025 record came together across sessions in London, Iceland, and on the road during Illa J's solo tour, and that movement shows in the seams: it drifts between neo-soul, jazz, hip hop, and downtempo electronics without ever announcing the change of lane. Harleighblu, Ke Turner, Frank Nitt, Belle Chen, and Laville all turn up, though the record never feels crowded.

Hangover moves at the pace its title suggests, all bleary keys and a bassline in no hurry to resolve. Danger tightens things up with the record's most insistent groove, Rain does the smoky late night thing without a hint of pastiche, and Dream, along with its reprise, gives the album its most weightless stretch, a hook drifting in and out of focus like something half remembered.

A debut this assured usually takes an artist a few records to reach.
