Violent Nature marks a genuine turning point for I Prevail, Eric Vanlerberghe handling every vocal on the record alone for the first time, both the clean melodic parts and the harsh screams that used to be split between two singers.
Brian Burkheiser's absence from this fourth album is the elephant in the room, and rather than paper over it, the band leaned into the change completely, self-producing under bassist and keyboardist Jon Eberhard's guidance and cutting the record in two separate stints at Nashville's Blackbird Studios. The result is deliberately the heaviest thing I Prevail have made, less interested in the poppier crossover moments that built their earlier audience and more committed to genuine aggression, a band redefining itself in real time rather than trying to quietly patch over a lineup change.
Synthetic Soul opens the record establishing that harder edge immediately, Vanlerberghe's dual vocal range doing work that used to require two people. Rain hits with the kind of battering intensity that made it the lead statement for the whole album. The title track sits at the record's emotional and sonic centre, and Crimson & Clover closes things on the album's most unexpected detour, genuine restraint breaking up an otherwise relentless sequence.
A band forced into reinvention and choosing to get heavier rather than safer. This is I Prevail proving the name still means something with just one voice carrying it.
