Shy Girl Vinyl
Only 18 left in stock.
Shy Girl is Hollie Cook's fifth album and a homecoming to Mr Bongo, the label that released her debut, a sun-soaked set of lovers rock that sounds more confident than ever.
Cook grew up around music, the daughter of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook, and cut her teeth touring with The Slits before building her own soft-hued tropical pop sound, steeped in London sound system culture and the records of Janet Kay and Phyllis Dillon. Written over three years in four cities with her longtime collaborators The General Roots Band, this 2025 set gathers twelve analogue reggae compositions about love in all its moods.
Shy Girl, the title track, opens the record as a buoyant slice of lovers rock written in a moment of spontaneous intuition. Night Night brings in dub MC Horseman for the first single, Frontline chugs through deep dub with raking electric guitar, and We Share Love closes things as a bittersweet roots ballad.
Cook has said the shy girl of the title is simply her, vulnerable and true to the music she loves, and that honesty runs through every groove. Warm, tuneful and effortlessly easy to return to, it is reggae made for long summer evenings and the quiet ones in between.
