Hebron Gate is the record that made a California reggae band impossible to dismiss as a novelty, a 2002 album that earned comparisons to the genre's actual classics.

Groundation started at Sonoma State University, of all places, built by Harrison Stafford around a genuine obsession with roots reggae rather than a pastiche of it, and by this third album they had the credibility to prove it: The Congos and Don Carlos, both bearing serious lineage from reggae's foundational era, appear throughout, lending the record a legitimacy few American bands in this genre ever earn. What Groundation added was their own instinct for stretching songs out with jazz harmony and horn arrangements without ever losing the one-drop underneath.

Jah Jah Know carries the album's clearest spiritual weight, a horn-laced meditation that never rushes to make its point. Babylon Rule Dem sharpens into something closer to protest, Silver Tongue Show lets the band's jazz leanings take over for long, patient stretches, and Weeping Pirates closes with the kind of slow-burning dub atmosphere that made this band's live shows legendary.

More than twenty years on, this is still the album people point to when they need to explain why Groundation belongs in the conversation with reggae's greats, not just adjacent to it.
