The Legend of 1900 is Ennio Morricone turning a piano into an ocean, and this numbered edition of 2500 on white vinyl is the pressing this score deserves.
By 1998, Ennio Morricone had already scored more than 500 films, but he still treated Giuseppe Tornatore's story of a piano prodigy born and raised aboard an ocean liner like it was the only one that mattered. The film, adapted from Alessandro Baricco's monologue Novecento and carried by Tim Roth's performance, follows a man who never once sets foot on land, and Morricone's music does the same thing the character does, it drifts and swells and never quite makes port. The score went on to win a Golden Globe, one more line on a resume already full of Grammys and BAFTAs.
Playing Love is the record's beating heart, a theme so simple and so devastating that Morricone lets it return twice, like a memory the film can't shake. 1900's Theme sets the whole world in motion with a few piano figures, Peacherine Rag lets the ship's ballroom scenes swing without ever losing Morricone's melancholy underneath, and Lost Boys Calling closes things out in a different register entirely, an actual song featuring Roger Waters and the late Eddie Van Halen.
This numbered white vinyl edition is built for exactly that kind of listening.
