Coleman Hawkins and Confrères catches the man who invented jazz tenor saxophone playing with total confidence among friends, this half-speed master finally giving the 1958 Verve session the audiophile treatment.
By the late 1950s Hawkins had spent three decades proving the tenor sax could be a genuine solo voice rather than just an ensemble instrument, and this record surrounds him with players who understood exactly what that legacy meant. The Oscar Peterson Trio anchors much of the session, Hank Jones and Herb Ellis sit in, and Roy Eldridge and Buck Clayton both bring trumpet into the mix, with Ben Webster, another towering tenor voice in his own right, guesting on the opener. The whole thing carries the loose, unhurried feel of musicians who genuinely enjoyed being in the room together rather than clocking in for a session.
Maria opens the record with Webster's presence adding real weight, two of the era's defining tenor voices sharing space without ever competing for it. Sunday lives up to its relaxed title, Eldridge stepping into a genuinely brilliant solo that carries the track. Honey Flower is where Hawkins' own sound, that voluminous, supple tone that shaped every tenor player who followed him, gets its clearest showcase right after Eldridge's turn.
Transferred from the original analog tapes, pressed on 180 gram vinyl in gatefold. A confident record, made by a man who'd earned every bit of that confidence decades earlier.
