Celtic Christmas Eve is Celtic Thunder doing what they do best, taking carols everyone already knows and giving them back with a lump in the throat, now on white vinyl.
The Irish vocal group built their reputation on scale, big harmonies and bigger arrangements, and Christmas turns out to be the season that suits them most naturally. This 2021 collection leans into the older and more solemn end of the repertoire rather than chasing sleigh bells and novelty, which is the right instinct. There's a reason Christmas Eve is the specific night in the title, that hush before the morning, family gathered, the world briefly quiet. The record aims squarely at that feeling and mostly hits it.
Carol of the Bells arrives with the full choral machinery running, all cascading counterpoint and gathering urgency, while Silent Night is delivered almost too plainly, and lands harder for it. In the Bleak Mid-Winter gets the treatment Christina Rossetti's words deserve, unhurried and genuinely cold. Christmas 1915 is the outlier and the record's emotional centre, telling the story of the wartime truce when soldiers on both sides stopped shooting long enough to sing, sung here without a hint of sentimentality.
