The Flying Club Cup Vinyl
Beirut’s The Flying Club Cup is a romantic travelogue in waltz time - a swooning, brass-soaked homage to old-world Europe filtered through indie sensibility. Originally released in 2007, it cemented Zach Condon’s gift for turning nostalgia into something vibrantly alive.
As the band’s second studio album, The Flying Club Cup trades the Balkan wanderlust of its predecessor for a distinctly French palette. Named after a hot air balloon festival in France, the record drifts through chanson-inspired arrangements, swooping strings, and triumphant horn sections. Recorded with a more expansive ensemble, it feels richer and more orchestrated, yet still intimate at heart.
Nantes bursts open with urgent piano and defiant brass, while A Sunday Smile balances buoyant rhythms with Condon’s quivering baritone. In The Penalty, dramatic percussion and sweeping melodies build a cinematic tension, and Cherbourg bathes in sepia-toned elegance. Every track feels like a postcard from a different arrondissement - wistful, windswept, and brimming with youthful longing.
