8 Tips for Full Catastrophe Living is Asher White's sixteenth album and her first for Joyful Noise, a record built like a collage rather than written like a song cycle, and it wears both approaches proudly.
White doesn't demo or draft before recording, she assembles each track sound by sound in the studio, which explains why doom metal can crack open into bossa nova mid-song, or psychedelic rock flip suddenly into industrial techno without warning. She cites J Dilla, LA beat scenes, and musique concrète as closer touchstones than anything resembling pop songwriting, and the album's whole conceptual engine, drawn from Claire Denis' films, Clarice Lispector's novels, and Eve Babitz's memoirs, treats apocalypse as slow and uneven rather than sudden, a condition people have survived and partied through before. This is also her first record mixed outside her own Providence studio, with Seth Manchester, of Lightning Bolt and Battles fame, giving the whole thing a rougher, more physical charge.
The Sink Thank You opens the record establishing that collage logic immediately, ideas colliding rather than resolving. Why I Bought the House carries genuine autobiographical weight beneath its blunt title. Cobalt Room: Good Work / Silver Saab is the record's most ambitious structural experiment, two ideas fused into one track.
Self-help book and chronicle of self-destruction, deliberately both at once. White has never been interested in picking a lane, and this record proves that's the whole point.
