The music world lost a shining star when Mac Miller, born Malcolm James McCormick, passed away on September 7, 2018. Widely loved for his cheeky humour, sharp wit and constant camaraderie towards his peers, Mac’s legacy as a person and an artist is still felt today.
We dive into his studio album discography – all of which paints a powerful picture of his artistry, growth and vulnerability over the years.
Please note – this article looks at Mac's six studio albums only, and does not include his further thirteen mixtapes.
1/ 'Blue Slide Park' (2011)
'Blue Slide Park' catapulted Mac into mainstream consciousness – a strong debut album, which paid homage to Frick Park Market in his hometown of Pittsburgh. From the playful "Party on Fifth Ave." to the controversial "Donald Trump", the tracks are full of youthful exuberance, witty wordplay and carefree melodies.
2/ 'Watching Movies with the Sound Off' (2013)
Featuring guest appearances from artists like Earl Sweatshirt, Ab-Soul and Tyler, The Creator, 'Watching Movies with the Sound Off' marked a huge shift in Mac's musical direction. Much darker and introspective in tone from its predecessor, his sophomore album, which features standout songs like "S.D.S." and "Objects in the Mirror", delved into his existential struggles with fame and substance abuse.
3/ 'GO:OD AM' (2015)
Like the dawn of a new day, 'GO:OD AM' saw Mac open up about his journey to hard-fought sobriety and thus finding clarity in life as heard on tracks like "100 Grandkids" and "Weekend". His third album also includes guests like Little Dragon, Miguel and more.
4/ 'The Divine Feminine' (2016)
A continued departure from his brash debut, 'The Divine Feminine' delves into Mac's softer side – exploring themes of love, relationships and femininity. Brimming with lush jazz-influenced production, this record saw Mac tapping more into his heart as heard on fan favourite "Dang!", which features Anderson .Paak.
5/ 'Swimming' (2018)
Released just a month prior to his passing, 'Swimming' unwittingly became a beacon of Mac's musical evolution as an artist. From "Self Care" to "Hurt Feelings", Mac is at his most vulnerable. And thus at his most resonant. Throughout 'Swimming', he laid bare his struggles with mental health – his honesty and emotional depth still striking a chord with fans to this day.
6/ 'Circles' (2020)
With the encouragement of Mac's family, producer Jon Brion helped complete Mac's final album 'Circles', which was release posthumously and served as a companion album to 'Swimming'. Head above water, 'Circles' focussed on acceptance and moving forward with tracks like "Good News" and "Blue World" capturing the poetic complexities of doing so.
From multiple GRAMMY nominations to endless praise from his peers like Thundercat, Mac left an indelible mark on the music scene that will continue to inspire and touch the hearts of many. His discography is a testament to his growth as an artist and his consistent willingness to go deeper and deeper with his craft
