Ween's 12 Golden Country Greats has always been a glorious practical joke with a real heart, and this three-LP deluxe edition opens the vault on the band's Nashville detour.

In late 1995, Gene and Dean Ween headed to Bradley's Barn in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, with producer Ben Vaughn and a crew of genuine Nashville legends, including the Jordanaires, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, Charlie McCoy and fiddler Buddy Spicher. Released in 1996, the album played it completely straight musically, even if the lyrics did not, and a couple of invited players turned the session down because of them. Despite the title, it contains ten songs.

The original album fills the first disc, running from the tender opener "I'm Holding You" to the gleefully profane "Piss Up a Rope". The second disc gathers demos for most of the record, while the third digs into vault outtakes and early versions, including the long-lost "So Long Jerry" and a previously unreleased cover of the Rolling Stones' "Fool to Cry", a real treat for the faithful.

Thirty years on, it remains one of the funniest and most lovingly played country records ever made by outsiders. This set finally shows the full picture of how they pulled it off.
