Live 9-19-76 catches Tommy Bolin barely two and a half months before his death, only the second show his own band ever played, now pressed on translucent red vinyl.

Bolin had already lived several careers by twenty-five, moving from the jazz-fusion outfit Zephyr to the James Gang to replacing Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple, where he wrote or co-wrote most of Come Taste the Band before the group splintered. This recording, captured in Albany in September 1976, catches him leading his own outfit for the first time, still finding his footing as a bandleader rather than a hired gun, which gives the whole set a genuine, unpolished energy. Two and a half months later he was gone, found dead of an overdose the morning after opening for Jeff Beck.

Teaser opens the set drawing from his own solo record of the same name, guitar work as fluid and unclassifiable as ever. People People carries real momentum this early in the band's life together. Post Toastee closes the show stretching out into genuine improvisation, the clearest evidence of exactly how good this new lineup could have become.

A guitarist who never stayed in one genre long enough to be boxed in, captured just months before that restlessness was cut short entirely. This is one of the last documents of where he was actually headed.
