Thrice closed their four-element concept project with The Alchemy Index Vols. III & IV: Air & Earth, two very different records set for a 2LP pressing on eco vinyl.

Released in 2008, a few months after Vols. I & II: Fire & Water, it completes a plan the band first imagined as four discs of six songs, each tied to an element. Thrice produced it with guitarist Teppei Teranishi, who also engineered and mixed, recording at his home in Orange County across 2006 and 2007. Dustin Kensrue wrote every lyric.

Air is all reverb and delay, guitars hanging in the atmosphere like weather. Broken Lungs sets a fragile, airy tone, and Daedalus takes the old myth of flight and builds it into one of the band's most cinematic moments.

Earth swaps all that for a stripped-down, rootsy sound built from banjo, tambourine, piano, horns and upright bass. Moving Mountains and Come All You Weary show how far the band could travel from their post-hardcore roots without losing an ounce of intensity, with Kensrue's voice leading the way.

Heard back to back, the two halves make one of the most adventurous records in the Thrice catalogue, and a fascinating listen for anyone who only knows their heavier side.
