What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits caught The Doobie Brothers in confident form in 1974, and it returns here as a limited 180-gram double LP.

Their fourth studio album, produced by Ted Templeman, balances Tom Johnston's hard-charging rockers with Patrick Simmons's rootsier, acoustic leanings. A strong supporting cast broadened the palette, including keyboardist Bill Payne, New Orleans piano great James Booker and The Memphis Horns, while Jeff Baxter, soon to join the band, added pedal steel.

Black Water is the album's crown jewel, a Simmons song built on acoustic picking, a swampy groove and that famous a cappella breakdown. It first appeared as a B-side before radio picked it up, eventually becoming the band's first chart-topping single. Johnston's Another Park, Another Sunday is a wistful song about losing a girl, and Eyes of Silver brings the horns to the front for a punchy, soulful workout.

Throughout, the twin-guitar interplay and stacked harmonies show a band growing in confidence, moving easily between boogie, folk and funk-tinged rock. Even the deeper cuts carry the loose, sunny swagger that made them a fixture of 70s FM radio.

More than fifty years on, Vices remains one of the essential records of their early era, and this heavyweight double LP gives those warm 70s arrangements plenty of room to breathe.
