Takin' It To The Streets is the 1976 album where The Doobie Brothers reinvented themselves, presented here as a limited 180-gram double LP.

The change came out of necessity. Founding frontman Tom Johnston was sidelined by stomach ulcers during the Stampede tour, and guitarist Jeff Baxter suggested a keyboardist and singer he knew from Steely Dan's touring band, Michael McDonald. With producer Ted Templeman guiding sessions at Warner Bros. Recording Studios in North Hollywood, McDonald's smoky voice and gospel-tinged keyboards pulled the band towards a sleeker blend of soul, jazz and rock.

The title track is the moment it all clicked, McDonald's rolling electric piano and soulful plea landing as one of the signature songs of the decade. It Keeps You Runnin' glides on a relaxed groove that still sounds effortlessly cool, while Wheels of Fortune, written by Patrick Simmons, Baxter and John Hartman, keeps a foot in the band's rockier past. Johnston, absent from most of the sessions, still contributes Turn It Loose, a reminder of the boogie that built their name.

The result is a band confidently stepping into a new identity without abandoning its harmonies or its sense of groove.

Spread across two heavyweight discs, this edition gives a landmark of 1970s West Coast rock plenty of room to breathe.
