Dissociation is the record The Dillinger Escape Plan chose to end on, announced as their final album before it even arrived, and it sounds like a band determined to leave nothing unsaid.

For two decades this band had treated mathcore's chaos as a discipline rather than an excuse, technical precision and genuine violence held in the same breath, and this 2016 record refuses to soften any of that for a farewell. If anything it widens the scope, jazz phrasing and IDM textures creeping into the mechanized brutality, subtlety applied to music that had never particularly needed it before. Knowing this was the end while making it clearly focused something in the writing rather than inviting nostalgia.

Limerent Death opens the record at full velocity, the band's signature controlled collapse still intact after all these years. Surrogate carries genuine emotional weight beneath the aggression, a rare moment of the band letting something like tenderness through. The title track closes the album, and by extension the band's entire career, on six minutes that build toward dissolution rather than triumph, which feels exactly right for a group that never once took the easy ending.

Eleven tracks, one last word from a band that spent its whole existence refusing to repeat itself. Dissociation makes sure that streak held to the very end.
