Lions marks its 25th anniversary as a limited double LP on clear blue vinyl, putting The Black Crowes at their heaviest back in the spotlight.

Released in 2001, the band's sixth studio album was their first after leaving Columbia for V2, a label that told them to make the record they wanted. Recorded in New York with Don Was producing, it found Rich Robinson covering most of the bass parts after Greg Rzab's exit, with guitarist Audley Freed appearing on his only Crowes studio album. The influences run from Led Zeppelin's thunder to late-1960s soul and funk.

Lickin' kicks the doors open with a greasy, strutting riff, and Soul Singing, lifted by a group of backing singers, became one of the album's signature moments on rock radio. Greasy Grass River features a searing guest lead from Craig Ross, while Lay It All on Me closes the set with Rich Robinson on piano, bringing the record down to a slow, soulful finish.

It is a big, swaggering record from a band unafraid to turn everything up, and a vivid snapshot of the Robinson brothers in full flight. Over four sides, this anniversary edition gives it the room it always needed, and the clear blue vinyl adds a cool counterpoint to all that heat.
