Jubilation was The Band's final studio album, a warm and unhurried 1998 farewell, presented here as a limited anniversary edition on clear burgundy vinyl.

Recorded at Levon Helm's home studio in Woodstock, it found Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson joined by Jim Weider and Randy Ciarlante, with producer Aaron Hurwitz also covering much of the piano and keyboard work. It was the first album of their reunion years on which original songs outnumbered covers, and Danko's death the following year effectively closed the book on the group.

Eric Clapton adds guitar to Last Train to Memphis, while John Hiatt sings and plays on his own Bound by Love, sharing lead vocals with Danko. Book Faded Brown opens the record with Danko's tender lead vocal, and French Girls closes it with a short instrumental from Garth Hudson, the band's quiet genius.

In between, the songs lean into rootsy Americana, including a song by New Orleans great Allen Toussaint, with Helm and Danko's weathered voices and Hudson's keyboards adding colour at every turn.

It may not carry the mythology of their early classics, but Jubilation is a heartfelt last word from musicians who helped define American roots rock, and this burgundy pressing gives it a fitting place on the shelf.
