System of a Down's Toxicity turns 25 with a red marble LP, a bonus 7-inch and a poster, celebrating the record that dragged Armenian folk and political fury into the mainstream.

Released in 2001 and produced by Rick Rubin with guitarist Daron Malakian, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and made the Los Angeles four-piece one of the most unlikely arena acts of their era. It was heavy, absurd, furious and strangely beautiful, often within the same minute, and nothing else on rock radio sounded remotely like it.

"Chop Suey!" is the lightning rod, lurching from machine-gun riffing to Serj Tankian's operatic plea in a heartbeat. The title track coils around a hypnotic riff before exploding, "Aerials" closes the album on a soaring, psychedelic high, and "Prison Song" opens it with a sharp attack on America's drug laws and swelling prisons. John Dolmayan's drumming and Shavo Odadjian's bass keep the chaos locked tight, while Malakian's manic yelps answer Tankian at every turn.

A quarter century on, it still sounds like nothing else, and it still makes a room full of strangers scream along. The bonus 7-inch makes this edition a keeper for anyone who wore out the original.
