Sam Cooke slows the tempo and turns up the intimacy on Mr. Soul, presented here on limited 180-gram orange vinyl imported from Holland.

Released by RCA in 1963, the album caught Cooke at a creative peak, recorded in the same year as the stripped-back Night Beat. Where that record leaned into after-hours blues, Mr. Soul is its more polished counterpart, a set built mostly around ballads and standards, with producers Hugo and Luigi framing his voice in rich, unhurried arrangements.

The standards get the full Cooke treatment. I Wish You Love opens the record with gentle warmth, Willow Weep for Me drifts on a melancholy sway, and Cry Me a River is delivered with velvet restraint. His own Nothing Can Change This Love sits comfortably among those classics, a reminder of how naturally his songwriting could stand beside the songbook greats.
