Western Approaches Vinyl
Western Approaches is Red Rum Club's fourth album and their first UK Top 10 entry, eleven tracks that trade some of their earlier spaghetti-western swagger for something rougher, closer to the Mersey docks that gave it its name.
The Liverpool sextet built their whole identity on an unlikely combination, Tarantino-inspired atmosphere carried by a lone trumpet weaving through guitar-driven indie rock, a sound that shouldn't work as well live as it does. This 2024 record, the follow-up to 2021's How to Steal the World, was written and recorded back home on the banks of the Mersey, and it leans into that geography directly, the title itself borrowed from a decommissioned World War II naval base in the city centre where the band conceived much of the album. American touring clearly left a mark too, the record's grittier edges owing as much to the road as to Liverpool's industrial relics.
Godless carries real weight and menace, trumpet cutting through darker than usual. Undertaker leans hardest into the band's western-tinged theatricality. Houdini is the record's most immediate, hook-forward moment, and Jigsaw Shores closes the album at its most sprawling, pulling every thread of the record's waterside imagery together.
Their first Top 10 album in the UK, and the sound of a band getting rougher rather than safer to get there.
