Homeworld 2 (Original Soundtrack) resurrects one of gaming's most quietly influential scores, remastered from tapes that had spent years sitting in a shoe box, now pressed as a 3LP box set.
Paul Ruskay was given remarkable creative freedom scoring the original Homeworld, pulling from Vangelis' Blade Runner atmosphere, Brian Eno's ambient logic, and Algerian DJ Cheb i Sabbah's global sampling technique to build something that made deep space feel genuinely vast rather than just empty. For this sequel he shifted toward richer, live-recorded instrumentation, elegant strings and traditional Indian vocal and instrumental work layered into the mix, a score that took the original's atmosphere and gave it real orchestral weight. Restoring it meant Ruskay physically digging out the original DAT tapes and decade-old Pro Tools sessions himself, remixing and resequencing everything from uncompressed masters rather than settling for whatever survived on the original game discs.
Opening sets the tone with exactly the patient, expansive scale the whole score depends on. The Pride of Hiigara carries the emotional weight of the series' entire mythology in a single cue. Vaygr Invasion is where the strings turn genuinely urgent, tension built through orchestration rather than obvious percussion, and Assault on Chimera delivers the score's most cinematic combat writing.
Fifty-eight tracks across three records, rescued from a shoe box and finally given the pressing this score always deserved.
