OutKast's Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik is the 1994 debut that put Atlanta on the hip-hop map, pressed here as an orange double LP UK import.

André 3000 and Big Boi were still teenagers from East Point when they fell in with the production team Organized Noize, whose basement studio, the Dungeon, became their creative home. Rico Wade, Ray Murray and Sleepy Brown produced the entire album for LaFace, leaning on live instruments and deep funk and soul grooves at a time when hip-hop's attention was fixed firmly on New York and Los Angeles.

Player's Ball, the lead single, set the tone with its laid-back, Cadillac-cruising swing and went to number one on the rap singles chart. The title track glides on warm, slow-rolling bass, and Ain't No Thang turns up the heat with a sample of Miles Davis. The centrepiece is Git Up, Git Out, a seven-minute epic with Goodie Mob that mixes hard street stories with a call to get your life together, and offered an early glimpse of CeeLo Green.

Beneath the cool, the record carries real conviction, proof that the South had its own voice and its own rules.

More than three decades later, its influence runs through generations of Southern rap, and the grooves still roll as easily as ever.
