White Darkness is Dan Swanö at his most straightforward, Nightingale's sixth album trading the project's earlier gothic weight for something closer to pure 70s-inspired rock, now pressed on white vinyl.

Swanö started Nightingale in 1995 as a deliberate escape from Edge of Sanity, the death metal band he'd built his early reputation on, wanting somewhere to use his actual clean singing voice rather than the guttural roars that project demanded. A decade and five albums later, this 2007 record sheds most of the gothic atmosphere that had carried Nightingale through its earlier years, landing instead on a genuinely catchy fusion of AOR, prog, and symphonic rock, still ambitious in arrangement but far more direct in execution. It's the sound of a musician who'd already proven his range choosing accessibility on purpose rather than by accident.

The Fields of Life opens the record with exactly that directness, hooks pushed to the front rather than buried under atmosphere. White Darkness, the title track, carries the album's most dramatic scope, Swanö's voice stretching into genuinely soaring territory. Trust closes things on the record's most anthemic note, proof the simplified approach never meant simpler songwriting.

A death metal veteran's side project finding its most purely enjoyable version yet. Swanö's versatility was never really in question.
