M is the hauntingly beautiful debut full-length from Myrkur, the black metal project led by Danish multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Amalie Bruun.
Originally released in 2015, this album is a bold and genre-blurring statement that merges the raw fury of second-wave black metal with ethereal Nordic folk and classical influences—delivering something fierce, feminine, and totally unforgettable.
The album opens with the icy blast of “Skøgen Skulle Dø,” a track that immediately sets the tone with shrieking vocals, tremolo-picked guitars, and punishing drums. But Bruun isn’t content to stay within genre lines. Tracks like “Onde Børn” and “Vølvens Spådom” shift seamlessly between blistering aggression and serene, choral passages, while “Mordet” and “Dybt i Skoven” evoke the spirit of ancient Scandinavian forests with haunting melodies and folk instrumentation.
Produced by Ulver’s Garm, M leans into a dynamic sound palette that includes piano, nyckelharpa, and choirs, creating a cinematic and immersive atmosphere. Bruun’s ability to command both angelic clean vocals and terrifying screams gives the album a stark contrast—beauty and brutality coexisting in perfect, spine-chilling harmony.
