Twenty years on, My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade still marches in full costume, and this anniversary edition arrives on grey vinyl in a gatefold jacket with an O-card.

Released in 2006 as the follow-up to Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, the band's third album is a rock opera built around The Patient, a dying man looking back on his life on the way to the afterlife. Produced with Rob Cavallo, it saw the band adopt the alter ego of the Black Parade itself, all marching-band uniforms and theatrical gloom. It pushed them from emo heroes to arena headliners almost overnight.

The music is just as grand. "Welcome to the Black Parade" starts with a lone piano note and a marching snare before exploding into a stadium-sized anthem, "Famous Last Words" brings the story home with defiant, shout-along fire, and "Teenagers" stomps with a glam-rock wink. "Mama" goes full cabaret, complete with a cameo from Liza Minnelli, as Gerard Way leans into the drama with obvious relish.

Two decades later, it remains the record many fans point to as the moment emo found Queen-sized ambition and the nerve to match it. This 20th anniversary pressing is a fitting way to honour that, and to hear the whole story unfold in one sitting.
