A year after his comeback, Muddy Waters doubled down with I'm Ready, the 1978 album back here on limited 180-gram pink vinyl.

Hard Again had put him back in the spotlight, and Johnny Winter returned to the producer's chair for this second Blue Sky release, again chasing the raw, in-the-room feel of Muddy's classic Chicago sides. He surrounded the blues giant with players who knew that sound from the inside, including Pinetop Perkins on piano and Big Walter Horton on harmonica, and kept the focus squarely on the groove rather than studio polish.

The title track "I'm Ready" struts with menace, Muddy's voice still deep and commanding in his sixties, while a fresh reading of "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" shows how little he had lost. "Rock Me" and "Screamin' and Cryin'" dig into deep, slow-burning blues, the guitars stinging and the harp wailing in the gaps. Nothing is rushed, and the space between the notes matters just as much as the notes themselves.

For blues collectors, this sits comfortably alongside Hard Again as a high point of Muddy's final run. The pink pressing adds an unexpected splash of colour to a record that is otherwise all grit and swagger, and it sounds every bit as tough as it looks.
