On October 31, 2020, Mr. Bungle returned in spectacularly unorthodox fashion with The Night They Came Home – a one-night-only, worldwide streaming event that captured the band’s first live performance in over two decades. Now preserved on 2LP white vinyl, this release bottles the chaos, humor, and ferocity that only Mr. Bungle can deliver.
Reuniting original members Mike Patton, Trey Spruance, and Trevor Dunn with thrash titans Scott Ian (Anthrax) and Dave Lombardo (Slayer), the setlist focuses on the band’s re-recorded debut The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo while sprinkling in some wonderfully unpredictable covers and surprises. Ferocious takes on “Anarchy Up Your Anus,” “Raping Your Mind,” and “Sudden Death” sit alongside left-field choices like Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze” and Van Halen’s “Loss of Control,” all filtered through Bungle’s genre-warping, prankster spirit.
Beyond the music, The Night They Came Home is pure performance art – an over-the-top spectacle blending razor-sharp musicianship with the band’s trademark absurdity. The crowd may have been virtual, but the energy is anything but contained.
