Arriving for the centenaries of both men, this collection gathers nine landmark recordings by Miles Davis and John Coltrane, making its vinyl debut across two LPs.

Between 1955 and 1961, Davis led a small group at Columbia that changed the direction of jazz, with Coltrane as its searching tenor voice. The band grew from the first great quintet with Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones into a sextet featuring Cannonball Adderley, with Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly and Jimmy Cobb also passing through. The compilation draws on 'Round About Midnight, Milestones, Kind of Blue and Someday My Prince Will Come, so the arc of that partnership unfolds side by side.

The earlier sides swing hard and bright. "Two Bass Hit" shows how well Davis's spare, economical lines sat against Coltrane's restless flurries, while "'Round Midnight" lets the Thelonious Monk ballad smoulder under a muted trumpet. By the time "So What" arrives, with Chambers' bass posing the question and the horns answering, modal jazz has fully taken shape, and "Blue in Green" is as hushed and intimate as anything Davis ever recorded.

It's a compact, beautifully chosen way into one of the great partnerships in the music, and a fitting way to mark a hundred years of both players. Set aside an evening and let all four sides play.
