In 1958 the Miles Davis Sextet hit the Newport Jazz Festival stage, and At Newport 1958 catches that band at full gallop, pressed on 180 gram black vinyl as a Holland import.

Look at the lineup: John Coltrane on tenor, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Bill Evans at the piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. This was nearly the same group that would record Kind of Blue the following year, but the mood here is far from cool and modal. It is fast, competitive and thrillingly restless.

After a spoken introduction from Willis Conover, the band tears into Charlie Parker's Ah-Leu-Cha at a breakneck tempo. Thelonious Monk's Straight, No Chaser gives Coltrane room to unspool his dense sheets of sound, with Cannonball answering in bright, bluesy runs. Fran-Dance eases into a gentler, lilting groove, and Two Bass Hit lets Chambers and Cobb drive the whole machine forward.

Parts of this performance first surfaced on Miles & Monk at Newport, and the full set was finally gathered as its own album in 2001.

Hearing it start to finish feels like standing near the front of the crowd while a band on the verge of changing jazz pushes itself as hard as it can.
