A Quiet and Harmless Living is Matt Maeson's third album, ten songs that trade some of his earlier grit for something more deeply introspective, pressed here on orange marble.
Maeson grew up in Virginia Beach with parents who ran a Christian ministry out of biker rallies and prisons, banned from secular radio until his teens, which explains a lot about the gritty folk-meets-alt-pop tension that made 2019's Bank on the Funeral and its breakout single Hallucinogenics hit as hard as they did. This 2025 record follows a proper studio album in Never Had to Leave and an acoustic live release, and it sounds like an artist consciously stepping back from bombast toward something quieter and more honest, the title itself reading almost like a mission statement.
Cursive brings in Manchester Orchestra for the record's most collaborative and emotionally weighted moment. A Good Start opens the album setting that reflective tone immediately, no big swing for the fences. Everlasting stretches out to five minutes, the longest and most patient song here, and Stubborn as Religion carries obvious weight given his upbringing, wrestling with faith without ever resolving it neatly.
Ten songs, thirty-seven minutes, an artist choosing restraint over the noise that first got him noticed. It suits him.
