Kings of Leon turn the amps down and pull the microphones close on O My Beloved, their tenth studio album, pressed as a 2LP set across four sides.

Two decades on from the shaggy Southern rock of Youth & Young Manhood, the Followill family have made what may be their most unguarded record. It is also the first Kings of Leon album produced entirely by the band themselves, and that freedom shaped where it went. A handful of louder, electric-leaning ideas were set aside in favour of stripped-back, acoustic-led songwriting, with lyrics drawn from family memories and childhood moments that seemed small at the time.

Lead single My Whole World comes from that deeply personal place and sets the tone for a record that trades stadium swagger for something closer and quieter. Cold Blue Dawn and Blue Jeans and Diamonds fill out a 13-song sequence that closes on Get You Down, the band letting melody and storytelling carry the weight that big riffs once did.

It is a brave turn for a group that could easily keep filling arenas on autopilot. Spread over four sides, these songs get the room and patience they ask for, which suits an album built on restraint, memory and a very Followill kind of tenderness.
