Kate Bush's The Red Shoes dances between devotion and mischief, and this remastered double LP on red 180 gram vinyl, a UK import, gives its twelve songs room to spin.

Her seventh studio album, issued by EMI in 1993, was self-produced and took its title and spirit from the classic Powell and Pressburger film about a pair of enchanted ballet shoes. It reached number two in the UK and was the last album she released before a twelve-year silence. Its guest list is remarkable: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Prince, Nigel Kennedy and the Bulgarian vocal group Trio Bulgarka all lend their talents.

"Rubberband Girl" opens with a springy, elastic groove and a lyric about bouncing back. "And So Is Love" is a weary, wise ballad graced with Clapton's guitar and Gary Brooker's Hammond organ, while "Moments of Pleasure" is one of her most moving songs, a piano-led reflection on friends and family she had lost. "Why Should I Love You?" pairs her with Prince, who adds keyboards, guitar, bass and vocals to a dizzying, funk-flecked collaboration.

The Red Shoes is eclectic and deeply personal, and it rewards anyone willing to follow its many twists and turns. The red vinyl is the only color that would do.
