Kate Bush's Hounds of Love returns as a 180-gram UK import on purple vinyl, a rich new colour for the 1985 album many fans hold up as her finest.

After the dense experiments of The Dreaming, Bush built a studio at home and took full control as producer, and the freedom paid off spectacularly. Side one is a run of near-perfect art-pop songs, most of them singles, while side two, The Ninth Wave, is a suite that follows a woman adrift in icy water through a long night, drifting between dreams and danger.

Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) opens the record with its thundering drum pattern and yearning vocal, and found a whole new generation when Stranger Things featured it in 2022. Cloudbusting, inspired by Peter Reich's memoir about his father Wilhelm, swells with urgent strings, while And Dream of Sheep begins The Ninth Wave in a fragile, piano-led hush that pulls you straight under.

Few albums balance pop instinct and pure ambition so gracefully, and more than four decades on it still sounds like it arrived from somewhere slightly beyond the rest of the 80s. This heavyweight purple pressing makes a gorgeous addition to any Kate Bush shelf, and a fine excuse to hear the whole thing again.
