Johnny Lytle’s People & Love returns in all its downtempo-funk glory, finally back on vinyl 50 years after its original release. This is soul-jazz at its silkiest - warm, groove-heavy, and impossibly cool.
Long revered by crate-diggers and vibraphone devotees, People & Love captures Lytle at a moment when jazz was leaning into funk’s pulse without losing its sophistication. Touted as “the greatest vibes player in the world” by Lionel Hampton, Lytle lets his mallets do the talking here, layering shimmering tones over tight rhythm sections and earthy backbeats. The result feels both laid-back and deeply locked in.
Standout cuts like People & Love and Where Is The Love ease in with buttery melodies and head-nodding rhythms, while grooves such as Glad I Found You and Family lean harder into that hypnotic, after-hours strut. Lytle’s vibraphone lines ripple and glow, dancing between soulful restraint and joyful release, giving each track a tactile, almost cinematic warmth.
This long-awaited reissue was mastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, and housed in a handsome tip-on jacket.
