Heads & Tails Vol. 2 continues Round Records' archival series of previously unreleased Jerry Garcia Band recordings, pairing two performances 17 years apart on a single purple LP.

The idea behind the series is simple and clever. Each side holds one continuous stretch of live tape, roughly the length of an LP side, rescued from reels where a tape flip, a rough cut or some other technical hiccup kept the show from a full archival release. The reversible artwork gives each side its own cover.

The Heads side travels back to Keystone Berkeley in 1976, capturing the night Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux, Garcia's bandmates in the Grateful Dead, made their debut with the group. Irving Berlin's Russian Lullaby gets a gentle, swaying treatment before the traditional Who Was John? kicks up some gospel dust.

Flip it over and it is 1993 at Portland Meadows in Oregon, with Garcia turning to two songs by other great songwriters. Van Morrison's And It Stoned Me unfolds slowly and warmly, and Daniel Lanois' The Maker becomes a long, soulful meditation, the band's organ and backing vocals swelling around his weathered voice.

Two eras and two very different moods share one record, and Deadheads will want to keep it within easy reach of the turntable.
