Itzhak Perlman takes his violin to Broadway and beyond on The Way We Were: My American Songbook, a warm-hearted collection of standards pressed on red vinyl.

Few classical musicians have crossed over with as much ease as Perlman, whose affection for jazz, klezmer and film music has long sat comfortably beside the concert hall repertoire. Here he turns to the great American songbook, choosing melodies by Kern, Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, Bernstein and Berlin, and letting the violin do all the singing.

Some of the most striking moments come with company. Jon Batiste joins him for a fresh take on Summertime, Josh Groban lends his voice to Some Enchanted Evening, and Someone to Watch Over Me pairs Perlman with the voice of Ella Fitzgerald, an encounter that feels like a small piece of musical magic. The title track, Marvin Hamlisch's wistful ballad, lets his famously golden tone glow at its most tender and unhurried.

This is music for slow evenings and good company, played by someone with nothing left to prove and plenty left to say. The red vinyl is a fitting splash of colour for songs this rich, and a lovely way to hear one of the great violinists of our age simply enjoying himself.
