Before the big rooms and shout-along choruses, Hot Mulligan were a scrappy Lansing, Michigan band with two early EPs, and Fenton + Honest & Cunning gathers both on colored vinyl.

Fenton and Honest & Cunning came out in 2015 on Save Your Generation Records, the first recorded steps from a group that would grow into one of modern emo's most beloved acts. Hearing them back to back is a little like flipping through an old yearbook: the jokes are sillier and the production rougher, but the heart is already fully formed.

Everything that defines them is in place, from Tades Sanville's raw, cracking vocals to restless guitars and song titles that read like inside jokes, such as "11 Second Burp" and "I'm Tuning To O-Positive". "Buy A Fire Extinguisher Before You Need A Fire Extinguisher" even shows up twice, once with the full band and once as an acoustic take, a neat glimpse of how sturdy their songwriting was from day one. Even this early, the hooks arrive fast and the lyrics hide real hurt underneath the punchlines.

For longtime fans this is a treasured origin story, and for newer converts it explains a lot about where the band came from. Eight songs, zero chill and plenty of heart.
