Peter Gabriel's exit could have finished Genesis, but A Trick of the Tail became their reinvention, and this limited 50th anniversary edition is due on 140-gram red vinyl.

Released in 1976 as the band's seventh studio album, it was recorded at Trident Studios in London with David Hentschel co-producing. Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford were determined to prove the band could thrive without its frontman, and sessions began before anyone had been chosen to sing. An advertisement drew hundreds of hopefuls, yet the answer was already behind the drum kit: Phil Collins reluctantly tried Squonk, impressed everyone, and the job was his.

That song still hits like a landslide, a stomping tale of a mythical creature built with a nod to Led Zeppelin's heavier side. Dance on a Volcano opens the album in a blaze of shifting rhythms and Steve Hackett's guitar, while Ripples pairs Rutherford's twelve-string with a piano-led middle section from Banks and a soaring guitar-synth solo from Hackett. Los Endos closes with an instrumental surge that slips in a brief sung tribute to Gabriel.

Critics praised the record's sound and the band's resilience, and it climbed to No. 3 in the UK. When this red pressing arrives, it will mark half a century of a band reborn.
