Open & Close Vinyl
Released in 1971, Open & Close captures Fela Kuti and his Africa ‘70 band in peak form - tight, funky, and unbothered by musical norms. The title track “Open and Close” stretches across a glorious 15+ minutes, showcasing Fela’s ability to turn a simple dance instruction into a swaggering, political, and deeply rhythmic epic.
The album is a masterclass in groove layering. On Side A, “Open and Close” builds tension and release through shifting horn lines, tight guitar vamps, and Fela’s commanding vocal delivery. It's playful, but also disciplined - Afrobeat precision at its finest. Side B brings “Swegbe and Pako (Part 1 & 2),” a two-part jam that leans even deeper into the funk, and “Gbagada Gbogodo,” a shorter but no less dynamic piece that wraps the album up with flair.
This pressing keeps things true to the original, right down to the analog warmth that makes these tracks feel alive. No flash or gimmicks here - just raw, essential Fela. His saxophone solos are sharp, his rhythms addictive, and his band? Unstoppable.
