Father John Misty's I Love You, Honeybear is a love album with one eyebrow permanently raised, returning as a single LP.

Josh Tillman's second record under the Father John Misty name arrived in 2015, a set of songs written around falling for and marrying his wife, Emma. It's romantic but never naive, setting real tenderness against jealousy, self-doubt and a running commentary on modern life that is equal parts withering and funny. He produced it with Jonathan Wilson, and Phil Ek handled the mix, giving the record a lush, warm finish. Originally spread across two discs, it now fits onto one.

The title track opens in a swirl of strings and grand declarations, setting the stage for what follows. "Chateau Lobby #4 (In C for Two Virgins)" is a giddy love song complete with mariachi horns, while "Bored in the USA" pairs a mournful piano ballad with a canned laugh track that lands somewhere between hilarious and devastating. Across eleven songs, Tillman keeps flipping between crooner and cynic without ever losing the thread.

It's one of the defining singer-songwriter records of its decade, as quotable as it is gorgeous. On a single LP, it plays as one unbroken confession, grandiose and prickly but completely sincere, and it rewards close attention to every line.
