The Monkey pairs Osgood Perkins' gleefully deranged horror comedy with a score that swings from playground whimsy to genuine dread, pressed here on brown and mint split vinyl.
Adapted from Stephen King's short story and produced by James Wan, this is Perkins following up Longlegs with something far more absurd on the surface, a cursed wind-up toy tearing a family apart across two generations, but Edo Van Breemen's score treats that premise with real conviction rather than winking at the joke. The tonal high-wire act the film pulls off, funny and horrifying in the same breath, only works because the music refuses to pick a side, whimsical cues sliding into genuine tension without warning.
Funeral Annie and Uncle Chip's Funeral both lean into the film's blackly comic body count, titles that tell you exactly how casually death gets treated here. Monkey's Paw carries the score's most direct nod to the toy's own menace, mechanical and unsettling. Aunt Ida's Demise, split across two parts, is the record's clearest set piece, tension escalating across both halves before the release finally lands.
A score that mutilates its own arrangements as gleefully as the film mutilates its characters. Warped, funny, and genuinely unsettling in equal measure.
