Hallelujah Sirens and Sleep Late for a Better Tomorrow finally reach vinyl two decades late, one Brooklyn band's early-2000s debut and the EP that preceded it, gatefold and seaweed colored across 2LP, limited to 250 copies.
Dirty on Purpose formed in Brooklyn in 2002 chasing a hazy, blurred-at-the-edges guitar sound with obvious debts to Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth, constantly in motion rather than settling on a single hook to sit still on. Erika Forster played keyboards through the early lineup before leaving to co-found Au Revoir Simone ahead of Hallelujah Sirens' 2006 release, one of those quiet lineage details that connects two very different corners of that era's indie scene. The EP came first in 2004, and pairing both here traces the band's actual arc rather than just cherry-picking the album everyone remembers.
No Radio opens Hallelujah Sirens drenched in reverb, guitars smeared just enough to feel disorienting without losing the melody underneath. Girls and Sunshine, carried over from the EP, is the clearest through-line between both releases, warm and genuinely gorgeous. Kill Our City catches the band at their most urgent, and Spider Eyes closes the collection on something hazier and more unresolved.
A band too easily filed under influence rather than judged on their own songwriting. Twenty years on, both records finally get to make that case properly.
