Bouncing Off The Walls: The Green Mind Tour 1991 drops in on Dinosaur Jr. at full volume, collecting nine live cuts from the year J Mascis took the band to a major label.

Green Mind arrived in 1991 as the band's first album for Sire, made largely by Mascis on his own after Lou Barlow's exit. On the road that year the songs took on extra weight, and this set gathers highlights from shows in Boston, Santa Cruz, Mezzago in Italy and London. Coming 35 years after Green Mind, it captures a band caught between college radio cult heroes and the alternative boom that was about to break wide open.

The guitar is the star, as it should be. "The Wagon" charges out of the gate with the fuzz turned to maximum, "Water" and "Thumb" show off Mascis's knack for wrapping sweet, cracked melodies in walls of noise, and "Freak Scene" is as gloriously ragged as ever. Between songs the sets swerve from feedback squall to fragile melody without warning, exactly as fans would hope.

For listeners who know the studio records inside out, this is the rawer flip side, sweaty and loud, mapping the sound that shaped so much 1990s guitar music. It belongs right next to Green Mind on the shelf.
