Dancing in the Street: E.P. gathers every mix of one of pop's most gloriously silly one-day miracles onto white vinyl for its 40th anniversary.
The whole thing happened in thirteen hours. Bowie and Jagger recorded the song and shot the video on the same day in June 1985, two weeks ahead of Live Aid, because neither of them could make it to the actual event and someone decided a joint cover was a better solution than skipping it entirely. The result was never meant to be taken too seriously, two enormous egos hamming it up shamelessly over a Motown classic, and that's precisely why it worked, a genuine cultural moment built on pure charitable urgency rather than careful planning.
The Clearmountain mix is the version most people actually remember, polished and radio-ready. The Steve Thompson mix runs longest and hits hardest, stretched out with more room for the song's inherent silliness to breathe. The instrumental strips everything back to just how absurdly fun the arrangement is without either vocalist mugging over it, and the dub pushes that same groove furthest into pure rhythm.
Every mix in one place for the first time, on the anniversary of a stunt that somehow became beloved rather than embarrassing. Some things only rock stars this famous could get away with.
